User-Research Menus

A foldout reference sheet that helped customers choose user research sessions to participate in at the Tableau Conference.

Problem

At the annual Tableau Conference, the user research team partners with product managers and developers to have open research sessions with customers on upcoming features.

For most of the session, customers need to be matched to relevant research topics and schedule their participation in advance but the digital version of the extensive schedule was hard to get an overview and choose from.

Goal

The user research team wanted a physical version of the research session schedule in addition to the digital version on the conference website to help customers more easily choose what to participate in and to serve as a quick reference for staff.

My role

Working from the conference style guide and collaborating with the User Research Program Manager, I was the Information Designer and Copy Editor.

Usability

  1. A continuous layout was chosen so all of the sessions could be seen and compared at once.

  2. Sessions were grouped by topic and kept together on pages to help choose relevant sessions.

  3. Styles and colors matched physical wayfinding in the conference space for consistency.

  4. Session length and appointment requirements were highlighted with color at the top of blocks for emphasis.

  5. It folded up to fit in a back pocket to keep on hand for easy reference.

Results

The menu was so helpful that customers were taking pictures of it to refer to in favor of the website version and I was asked back the next year to create another one.
